Ayurveda Perspective

Improper diet and lifestyle vitiates the Vata (Apan Vayu), Pitta and creates Aam, leading to excessive heat in the body and low nourishment of the male reproductive system. These changes bring about swelling in the Shukravaha channels giving rise to disorders like Varicocele, infection, low sperm production, etc. Also vitiated Apan is not able to carry on its routine function properly i.e. proper fertilization of the sperm or to get the partner conceive. This leads to infertility.

Healthy Male Fertility Explanation

Male fertility is a complex process. To get your partner pregnant, the following must occur:

  • You must produce healthy sperm. Initially, this involves the growth and formation of the male reproductive organs during puberty. At least one of your testicles must be functioning correctly, and your body must produce testosterone and other hormones to trigger and maintain sperm production.

  • Sperm have to be carried into the semen. Once sperm are produced in the testicles, delicate tubes transport them until they mix with semen and ejaculated out of the penis.

  • There needs to be enough sperm in the semen. If the number of sperm in your semen (sperm count) is low, it decreases the odds that one of your sperm will fertilize your partner's egg. A low sperm count is fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen or fewer than 39 million per ejaculate.

  • Sperm must be functional and able to move. If the movement (motility) or function of your sperm is abnormal, the sperm may not be able to reach or penetrate your partner's egg.

To increase the chances of getting pregnant, some women go above and beyond. Counseling prior to conception?Tracking fertility? Unfortunately, a man's contribution to a couple's plans to have a baby is often overlooked. There is no guarantee that his sperm will mate with your egg if there's any problem with your partner's health.

Nearly half of all cases of infertility are caused or contributed to is by male infertility. A recent survey reveals that many couples proceed with fertility treatments like intrauterine insemination or In Vitro fertilization (IVF) before a man's fertility is tested.

In order to provide you with the inside scoop on what women need to know about guys' sperm-making capabilities and what couples can do to improve the quality, quantity, and delivery of sperm, particularly if you are having difficulty conceiving, Ayushakti Ayurved has examined what could be the potential causes of male infertility and how to manage it.

6 Top Reasons of Male Infertility

  • There aren't really any early warning signs of male infertility

There are some circumstances that might lead you to believe you have a "male factor" issue. For instance, if your partner had groin surgery or childhood cancer, he may be more susceptible to fertility issues later in life.

  • Sperm Count are Low

It's possible that his sperm count is low. A typical sperm sample contains millions of sperm. However, there are numerous factors that can alter the quantity and quality of these male reproductive cells, making it more difficult for him to make you conceive.

Men's total motile count is 2 million if the total sperm count is 10 million and 20% of them are motile (swimming). If you want to have a good chance of getting pregnant naturally, then a man should have more than 20 million motile count.

  • A man's fertility is a sign of his overall health

If the issue is caused by something health-related, lifestyle-related, or environmental, it might actually be reversible or treatable. A hormonal issue like low testosterone or type 2 diabetes could be the cause of a lower sperm count. Additionally, it may indicate the presence of an infection. The sperm may experience plumbing issues as a result of certain sexually transmitted diseases, making it more difficult for the sperm to get out.

  • Problems with Reproduction System

If there are problems with other parts of his reproductive system, he may not be able to make you conceive. A "varicocele," or enlarged vein in the scrotum, is the most common identifiable cause of male infertility. It reduces a man's sperm's quality and quantity. The majority of guys don't know they have one until they see a doctor, unless it's an extreme case.

  • Infections

The quality of sperms is adversely affected by viral or chronic bacterial infections. Some infections can interfere with sperm production or sperm health or can cause scarring that blocks the passage of sperm. These include inflammation of the epididymis (epididymitis) or testicles (orchitis) and some sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhoea or HIV.

  • Environmental factors

Overexposure to certain environmental elements such as heat, toxins and chemicals can reduce sperm production or sperm function. Specific causes include- industutrial chemicals, heavy metal exposure like lead, radiation or xrays, and  frequent use of saunas or hot tubs may temporarily impair your sperm count.

  • Other Factors

Sitting for long period of time, wearing tight clothing can  increase the temperature in your scrotum and may slightly reduce sperm production.

Ayurveda Treatment For Male Infertility

In Ayurveda, infertility is referred to as Vandhyatwa—the inability to conceive before a couple of mature years of age despite having normal coitus and going through an appropriate ritu-chakra (menstrual cycle) period regularly for more than a year.

Charakacarya identified defeats in the bijamsha—spermatozoa and ovaries—as the root causes of the abovementioned conditions. He goes on to say that proper aahara (food and digestion), vihaara (the good conduct and lifestyle of the couple), vichaara (the thought process, mental stability), manas and hridaya" (the mental state), properly functioning vayu (the nervous system), acceptance of shukra (semen), and deposition of semen high in the vagina are essential for procreation.

Vajikarana is the branch of Ayurveda that deals with sexual health. Modifying one's basic lifestyle is necessary to overcome infertility.

Treatment Fundamental

  • Balancing aggravated Pitta Dosha ( Reduce heat & regulate bile flow)
  • Eliminating aam from the body ( Remove block)
  • Detox ( Eliminate deep seated toxins)
  • Increase Shukra (Increase sperm count & improve its quality)

Detox Treatment (Panchakarma)

Detox is the Ayurvedic cleansing process for body, mind and emotions that helps you to create holistic health and well-being in your life. Digestive impurities such as mucus and metabolic toxins pile up in the veins, intestine, liver and joints. They circulate throughout the entire body and block the system. Continuous build-up of these impurities can cause physical and mental disorders and disease. A Detox helps to clean out toxins. Marma points help to remove blockages and improve circulation.

Treatment with panchakarma has been shown to get the aggravated doshas back on track.

The following are some panchakarma treatments for male infertility:

  • Basti
  • Shodhana
  • Chikitsa (treatment for cleaning)
