Fighting Back Against Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) With Ayurveda

Fighting Back Against Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) With Ayurveda

One of the most severe health issues affecting millions of people each year is Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), the second most common type of infection in the body.

The kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra are the sites of infection in the urinary tract (UTI). When urine is eliminated from the body, it passes through these organs. Despite generally having urinary tracts that are anatomically and physiologically normal, women are particularly susceptible to UTIs. A microbial infection that can affect any part of the urinary tract is called a urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection:

  • Abdominal pelvic pain in women
  • Rectal pain in men
  • Fever
  • Burning while urinating
  • Frequent urination
  • Cloudy dark smoky urine
  • Foul-smelling urine
  • Weakness and Fatigue
  • Low Appetite

In Ayurveda, the UTI is referred to as Mutrakricchra and is associated with several etiologies or root causes. Various unhealthy foods and activities aggravate the body's tridosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Ama (undigested food particle/toxin) is produced by the vitiated state of tridosha and mandagni (reduced digestive capacity), when all of these combined with the body dosha, it results in sama—vitiated doshas mixed with food particles that cannot be digested. Mutrakrichhya is the result of this impacting the mutra vaha srotas (urinary tract). The toxins that are hot in nature (E-coli etc.) continue to accumulate in the urinary channel which causes burning sensation pain, and swelling in the urinary tract. This is known as urinary track infection.

What Causes Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

  • Over Exercise
  • Excessive intake of pungent food, vinegar, fermented food, sour food, junk food, and contaminated food
  • Intake of excessive red meat & fish
  • Travelling by a speedy vehicle
  • Suppression of natural urges like urine, stools, flatus etc
  • Involving in other activities like eating, drinking, physical exercise while having urine sensation
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Irregular eating habits
  • Trauma to the urinary parts
  • Low hygiene

Pathological Representation of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) from an Ayurveda Perspective

Modern Medicine portrays the causes as:

Infection-causing organisms typically enter the urinary tract in one of two ways. The opening of a man's urethra at the tip of the penis or the opening of a woman's urethra at the vulva is the far and away most prevalent route. The infection travels up the urethra to the bladder, the kidneys, or both, depending on the situation. The bloodstream, typically to the kidneys, is the other possible route.

Although some viruses, fungi, and parasites can also infect the urinary tract, bacteria like Escherichia Coli (E-coli)  are almost always to blame for UTIs.

Various UTI conditions include:

An infection of the urethra, the hollow tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, is known as urethritis.

Cystitis is a bacterial infection that often originates in the bladder and has advanced from the urethra.

Pyelonephritis is an infection of the kidneys that typically arises from an obstruction in the urinary tract or an infection that has spread up the tract. Urine backflows into the ureters and kidneys when there is an obstruction in the urinary tract.

Ayurveda's treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) entails individualized diet, lifestyle, herbal Medicine, and detox treatments, or "Panchakarma," as it is referred to in ancient Ayurvedic texts.

Ayurveda Management For UTI’s

A reversal of the pungent (pitta) and excessively dry (vata) conditions that are prevalent in the urinary tract and throughout the system can be achieved with the help of detox therapies, which are both local (douching with medicated decoctions) and systemic (Panchakarma). Even severe cases of UTI can be reversed with this multifaceted approach.

Detox is the Ayurvedic cleansing process for body, mind and emotions that helps you to create holistic health and well-being in your life. Digestive impurities such as mucus and metabolic toxins pile up in the veins, intestine, liver and joints. They circulate throughout the entire body and block the system. Continuous build-up of these impurities can cause physical and mental disease. A Detox helps to clean out toxins. Marma points help to remove blockages and improve circulation.

Vamana (Therapeutic Vomiting)

Vamana implies remedial vomiting, which is a sedated emesis. Vamana therapy is done for the Kapha predominant UTI, which predominantly removes toxins from the upper part of the body. This therapy is practiced for preventive and therapeutic purposes.

Virechan (Purgation)

Virechan is the sedated purgation treatment that scrubs the body from the Pitta Dosha and eliminates toxins from the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and nerve bladder.

Virechan is a sodhana(purification) treatment. This is typically finished after Snehapana and three days of fomenting. Medication will be in any structure, fluid or powder, or decoction and should be taken while fasting. Before taking the medication, the patient should hydrate regularly until defecations start.
